Affirmations

This body of work began during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Each of the works on paper contains an expression that I heard, read, or encountered in some way. Most of the short phrases have a positive undertone: they are personal mantras or words of affirmation. The series is at once a reflection of my personal desire to generate a more positive outlook during a challenging time and a commentary on the messages of toxic positivity that surround us, especially on social media.

These smaller works on paper are developed using design software. The designs are etched on heavyweight paper using the laser cutter. I finish each design by painting the intricate designs by hand—a slow and meditative process that has a way of producing calm for me as the maker, and often in the eyes of the viewer.
